KOVALAM: The fourth edition of the International Kovalam Marathon 2026 brought together around 3,000 runners from 19 Indian states and seven countries, strengthening Kovalam's profile as a destination for sports, fitness and event tourism.
The marathon was held on September 13, 2026, and was organised by the Young Indians (Yi) Thiruvananthapuram chapter of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The event combined running, wellness, tourism, community participation and technology against the backdrop of one of Kerala's best-known coastal destinations.
Humanoid robot joins the marathon
One of the highlights of this year's event was the participation of ‘Pachu-The Robo’, a humanoid robot. Organisers and participants noted the robot's presence as a notable technology-related feature of the marathon and a first of its kind for an Indian marathon, according to The New Indian Express.
The participation of the robot brought together technology and sport, while adding an innovative element to an event traditionally centred on fitness and endurance.
Sports tourism gets a boost
The international participation gave the event a strong tourism dimension. Runners travelling from different parts of India and overseas contributed to the marathon's role as a destination event, bringing visitors to Thiruvananthapuram and the Kovalam region.
The official Kovalam Marathon organisers describe the event as an international running experience that combines endurance, wellness, tourism, culture and community participation. The route is designed to showcase the coastal landscape and cultural heritage of the Thiruvananthapuram region.
With thousands of participants taking part, the marathon also provided an opportunity to showcase Kovalam beyond its traditional image as a beach holiday destination. Sporting events of this scale can bring together visitors, local residents, hospitality businesses and other tourism-related sectors.
Promoting fitness and a healthy lifestyle
The 2026 marathon also carried a social message promoting healthy living and discouraging substance abuse. During the event, South Zone IG G. Sparjan Kumar administered the ‘Operation Toofan’ pledge and highlighted the role of sports in addressing drug abuse.
The organisers said the Kovalam Marathon aims to develop a model that brings together technology, sports, social responsibility and inclusion.
The growing participation in the event adds another dimension to Kovalam's tourism calendar, alongside its beaches, resorts, Ayurveda centres, cultural attractions and other leisure activities.
The successful fourth edition of the International Kovalam Marathon further establishes the coastal destination as a venue capable of hosting large-scale sporting and community events, while giving visitors another reason to experience Kovalam and Thiruvananthapuram.
