Kovalam Gains Prominence in Keralam’s Growing Adventure Tourism Circuit
Kochi, September 2026: Kovalam is emerging as a key destination in Kerala’s expanding adventure tourism network, with the coastal resort town identified among the top locations for ocean-based adventure activities.
Speaking at the Kerala Travel Mart (KTM) 2026 in Kochi, Binu Kuriakose, CEO of the Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society (KATPS), highlighted the state's growing reputation as a multi-dimensional adventure tourism destination. He said Keralam's diverse geography lets visitors experience adventure activities across mountains, rivers, beaches, and the skies.
Kovalam joins key coastal adventure destinations
Along with Varkala and Bekal, Kovalam was identified as one of the coastal destinations with significant potential for ocean-based adventure tourism. The three destinations complement Keralam's inland adventure centres, including Wayanad, Idukki and Vagamon.
Kovalam already has an established presence in the state's water-sports tourism sector. The Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society lists Kovalam among its important water-based activity destinations, while the state's tourism authorities identify activities such as surfing, parasailing, sailing and other watersports along the Kovalam coast.
The destination's location along the Arabian Sea and its established tourism infrastructure provide a base for expanding its adventure offering alongside its traditional reputation as a beach and wellness destination.
From beaches to mountains and skies
Kuriakose pointed to Keralam's geographical diversity as a major factor behind the growth of adventure tourism. The Western Ghats, 44 rivers, numerous water bodies and nearly 600 kilometres of coastline provide opportunities for a wide range of activities.
The state's adventure tourism portfolio now extends from trekking and mountain activities to kayaking, rafting, surfing and paragliding. The Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society officially categorises its activities into land-based, water-based and air-based adventure tourism.
Kovalam and Varkala are particularly suited to the coastal segment. KATPS notes that surfing at Kovalam benefits from regular waves, while its water-sports programme also identifies Kovalam and Varkala for activities such as windsurfing and other marine experiences.
Safety remains a key focus
The growth of adventure tourism is also being supported by greater emphasis on safety and professional standards. According to Kuriakose, Keralam introduced comprehensive adventure tourism safety guidelines in 2019, and adventure operators across land, water and air activities are subject to registration and periodic audits.
The state is also developing training programmes to address the need for skilled personnel in the adventure tourism sector.
For Kovalam, the increasing focus on adventure tourism could add another dimension to its established tourism profile. Alongside its beaches, Ayurveda, wellness and hospitality facilities, the destination can increasingly position itself as a base for active coastal experiences and water-based recreation.
With KTM 2026 placing greater emphasis on adventure and experiential tourism, Kovalam's inclusion in the state's coastal adventure circuit highlights the destination's potential to attract visitors looking for experiences beyond conventional beach holidays.
