World Maritime Day Celebrations to Be Held in Kochi on September 24
KOCHI: Kerala will observe World Maritime Day 2026 with a series of programmes in Kochi on September 24, bringing together maritime heritage, shipping, ports, marine research, the blue economy and ocean tourism.
The state-level celebrations are being organised jointly by the Kerala Maritime Board, Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited and Malabar International Port and SEZ Limited, with the participation of the Archaeology and Fisheries departments, Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) and the Kerala Council for Historical Research.
Maritime exhibition to highlight Kerala's seafaring heritage
The day's programme will begin at 8 a.m., with a maritime exhibition and heritage museum area being opened to the public. The exhibition will showcase Kerala's long maritime history, including the state's sea trade links dating back to the Roman period, archaeological discoveries from Pattanam, and concepts for the proposed maritime museum and oceanarium.
The exhibition will be organised across seven special zones, offering visitors an overview of Kerala's maritime heritage and its future potential.
Discussions during the programme will focus on themes including “Maritime is My Future,” “Maritime Heritage and the Museum,” “Blue Economy,” and “Oceanarium and Holistic Tourism.”
International Maritime Museum and Oceanarium
The concluding session will be held at Le Méridien Kochi at 6 p.m. The Chief Minister will inaugurate the closing ceremony and release the concept document and logo of the proposed International Maritime Museum and Oceanarium announced by the state government.
The proposed museum and oceanarium could provide a new platform to showcase Kerala's maritime history, marine biodiversity and relationship with the Arabian Sea.
Relevance to Kerala's coastal tourism
The celebrations are also significant for Kerala's growing focus on marine and coastal tourism. With major developments at Vizhinjam International Seaport, historic coastal destinations such as Kovalam and Anchuthengu, and Kerala's extensive maritime heritage, the state has several elements that can be incorporated into future marine tourism experiences.
The 2026 World Maritime Day theme selected by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) is “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence.” The theme runs across 2026 and 2027 and focuses on translating maritime policies and international frameworks into practical action, including safer, more sustainable and environmentally responsible maritime activities.
For Kovalam and Thiruvananthapuram, the event also draws attention to the wider potential of the state's southern coastline, particularly through the development of maritime heritage, marine education, coastal experiences and responsible ocean tourism.
As Kerala expands its port and maritime infrastructure while promoting its coastal destinations, World Maritime Day 2026 provides an opportunity to connect the state's maritime history with emerging opportunities in marine tourism, conservation and the blue economy.
