Kovalam Beach Safety Concerns Grow as More Than 200 Streetlights Remain Non-Functional
Kovalam, October 2026: More than 200 streetlights along Kovalam's popular beach stretches have reportedly remained non-functional for around eight months, raising concerns about visitor safety and the condition of public infrastructure at one of Kerala's leading coastal tourism destinations.
The affected areas reportedly include Lighthouse Beach, Hawa Beach and Grove Beach, where inadequate lighting after sunset has made it more difficult for tourists and local residents to move around comfortably at night. The prolonged disruption has also drawn attention to delays in maintenance and administrative procedures needed to restore the lighting system.
Maintenance Delays Leave Beach Areas in Darkness
According to a report published by Mathrubhumi, the streetlights were installed using solar-powered systems under a tourism development initiative. The lights reportedly stopped functioning after the maintenance agency's contract ended.
Complaints from hotel associations and police have reportedly failed to bring about a timely resolution. The lack of regular maintenance arrangements has become a concern, particularly in areas that attract visitors for evening walks, dining, shopping and beachside activities.
Well-lit public spaces are an important part of the visitor experience at coastal destinations. When lighting fails over an extended period, tourists may find it difficult to navigate pathways and access nearby facilities after dark.
₹16 Lakh Repair Estimate Awaits Administrative Action
The report indicates that the delay is linked partly to administrative procedures. A report from the tourism information officer was reportedly pending, while a working group meeting was required to consider a repair estimate of approximately ₹16 lakh submitted by Keltron.
The pending procedures have reportedly prevented repair work from progressing as expected. The situation highlights the importance of clear maintenance responsibilities and timely approvals for public infrastructure serving major tourism destinations.
A reliable maintenance system is particularly important for solar-powered streetlights, which require periodic inspection and repairs to ensure continued operation.
Concerns for Kovalam's Evening Tourism
Kovalam attracts domestic and international visitors throughout the year, with Lighthouse Beach and Hawa Beach serving as major attractions. Evening beach walks, restaurants, shops and other visitor activities contribute to the destination's tourism economy.
Adequate lighting can improve visibility and help visitors feel more comfortable when walking between the beach, accommodation facilities and nearby commercial areas. Prolonged lighting failures can therefore affect not only public convenience but also the wider tourism experience.
The issue also comes at a time when authorities and tourism stakeholders are discussing improvements to Kovalam's public amenities and coastal infrastructure.
Need for Timely Repairs and Better Maintenance
The reported streetlight failure underlines the need for a coordinated response involving the concerned tourism authorities, maintenance agencies and local administration. Expediting the pending approvals, completing the necessary repairs and establishing a dependable maintenance arrangement would help address the immediate problem.
Regular inspections and a clear system for reporting and resolving faults could also reduce the likelihood of similar disruptions in the future.
For Kovalam, improving basic facilities is essential to maintaining its reputation as a leading beach destination in Keralam. Restoring the non-functional streetlights would be an important step towards making the beach areas more accessible and comfortable for visitors after sunset.
